What is GPS and how does it work?

A GPS tracking unit is a device that uses the Global Positioning System to determine the precise location of a vehicle, person, or other asset to which it is attached and to record the position of the asset at regular intervals. The recorded location data can be stored within the tracking unit, or it may be transmitted to a central location data base, or internet-connected computer, using a cellular (GPRS), radio, or satellite modem embedded in the unit. This allows the asset's location to be displayed against a map backdrop either in real-time or when analyzing the track later, using customized software.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is made up of 27 Earth-orbiting satellites (actually there are only 24 satellites that are operational and 3 additional for backup in case one of the 24 fails). These satellites are equipped with atomic clocks that send radio signals of their location. When the GPS receiver locks on to four or more of these satellites, it triangulates the position of the receiver using the coordinates of the satellites. The device receives updated position information every 3 to 5 seconds.

The technology allows you to pinpoint the location of an individual who is in possession of a tracking device and can be monitored through a PC or cell phone.Back to top

When Would I Use GPS for My Children?

Has your child ever wandered off in a crowded fair ground, concert or even the mall? Your heart races with fear as you frantically search and fear that they have been hurt or kidnapped. Children are naturally curious and easily distracted - wouldn't it ease any parents mind to immediately identify their location?

As children get older they spend less time in the company of their parents. Children begin to walk home from school without their parent’s supervision, spend more time playing with friends and gradually become more independent. While every child needs to have some independence it can be extremely worrying to parents waiting for their return. A GPS tracking device can help you monitor your child's movements and determine if they are safely coming home or have become diverted or stranded.Back to top

Does 911 accept text messages?

In 2007 we began to see an overhaul of 911 technology nationwide with the advent of so-called Next Generation 911, an Internet-protocol based system capable of adapting to new technology and devices to support all types of electronic data. Not only could 911 centers receive text messages, photos and videos, but they could, in theory, disseminate that data in real time to police, paramedics and firefighters in the field. To date, this system may not be in place in all areas. We urge you to contact your local police department before assigning 911 as one of your emergency contacts with our devices containing the SOS button.Back to top

Is it illegal to track someone without their knowledge?

The laws vary from region to region but in general yes, the use of a GPS tracking device to track a person without their permission could be illegal or result in a legal action against you. While this device can be used for covert tracking, that is not our market. We are providing individuals with the ability to track their own assets. In fact, we strongly recommend when being used to track teen drivers that they be made aware they are being tracked. This knowledge alone can serve as a deterrent to any misbehavior.Back to top
